Day 7 - Arizona to Las Vegas

After a peaceful sleep, we hit the road for Kim’s 9am appointment with the Dean of Admissions at Prescott College in Prescott, AZ (as Kim dreams about a PhD, Prescott’s environmental education program would be her top choice).

We jumped back into the car to head to Arcosanti (an “urban” architecture laboratory of community artisans). Kim admires the model that Arcosanti was founded on since she first learned about it ten years ago. Andrew was amazed at the environmental design innovations. We came in hopes of doing a quick interview with the PR contact for the organization and to see a tour of the site. And, we ended up spending almost an entire day there doing both of those things plus having the opportunity to meet Paolo Soleri (the innovative Italian architect who began work on the construction of Arcosanti 40 years prior). Soleri was a student of FLW’s at Taliesin West and is now 91 years old. Kim even had the opportunity to sit in and film a circle discussion with him on the topic of sustainability and American consumerism.

After a hot and sweaty day in the Arizona desert, we were appreciative of the air conditioning in the Prius that got us to Las Vegas around 11pm that night.

45 minutes outside of Las Vegas, Kim was nodding off in the passenger seat and woke up to find the car stopped at a road check (Andrew thinks this was to check for illegal immigrants going into and out of Arizona). After that excitement passed, within moments, we found ourselves at the Hoover Dam. We were excited to see it lit up at night, but, disappointed that our photos didn’t turn out too great.

*** we wrote this post the morning of the break-in so that we could later post the photos when we had internet signal.... but we are sorry to say the next few posts will not contain photos, because they were all downloaded to our laptop that was stolen.......
